Modern Expressions 3-D with Verdiano Marzi
In this CMS workshop,Visiting Artist and community mentor Maestro Verdiano Marzi directs students in sculptural opportunities for mosaics. In this 5-day Master Class-style workshop, students are offered a transformative and informative experience working with a world-renowned master artist. Through individualized guidance, participants can explore concepts and designs for sculptural projects while strengthening their artistic vision and technique while working in a 3-dimensional format. Through demonstrations, discussions, material experimentation, and presentations, Maestro Marzi instructs students how to gain skills and confidence in their work. Students will play with composition, rhythm, and color to gain new perspectives about their work and practice. This workshop will help students discover the synergy between materials, shape and content. Hammer and Hardie cutting techniques will be used for both stone and glass; the tesserae will be set into mortar using the direct method. Some pre-class information will be sent out closer to class time.
All materials are included. Prerequisite: Hammer & Hardie Workshop, Mosaic I, Mosaic II, and Mosaic III (or by permission of CMS).

Verdiano Marzi is one of the most highly regarded contemporary mosaic artists. As a permanent resident of Paris and a former instructor at the École du Louvre, Marzi’s own work is abstractly narrative, using his subtle understanding of color and texture to evoke ethereality and expressive movement. His many years of dedicated practice and experience provide valuable insight into mosaics through his use of an expansive range of materials and techniques, from the ancient to the contemporary.
