Embracing The Broken: Mosaic and Metaphor - with Karen Ami
Each of us holds beautiful yet imperfect narratives within us. Art is a way to express our experiences and perspectives, bringing connection and healing to the world and ourselves. How do we address our stories, identities, and our ideas when words aren’t enough? Collecting snippets of the world—such as photos, poems, and shards—we can assemble them into meaningful creations that ignite our passion for telling our stories. Mosaics are a unique art form that involves collecting, reusing, and reinventing materials. In this workshop, students will experiment with challenging traditional mosaic rules to express their unique and personal stories. perspectives through play and experimentation.
Led by artist and CMS founder Karen Ami, participants can find relationships with materials such as broken shards, nostalgic relics, and other fragmented and fractured materials, giving new life to what was broken, in a creative act of redemption and repair. This workshop offers more than the opportunity to create a single project; it’s an exciting journey that raises awareness and motivates you towards your future artistic endeavours. Through engaging exercises, students can uncover new ways to develop their ideas through play and experimentation in a stimulating yet supportive environment.
Sketchbooks and drawing pens will be provided to every student to record and reflect on notes, scribbles, doodles, and collages, building a library of stories and ideas for future works. Participants will also create their own original carved and inscribed tesserae (clay elements) to use in mosaic. Students will have completed several projects that reflect the concepts and possibilities, and gain skills for individual practice.
All materials are included. No prerequisite.
