Modern Expressions with Verdiano Marzi
CMS Visiting Artist Maestro Verdiano Marzi returns to Chicago once again to offer several exclusive excellent workshop opportunities. In this 5-day Master Class-style workshop, students can experience a transformative shift in their studio practices while working with this world-renowned master artist. Participants will be challenged to reach new ground in their work by bringing in their own concepts and designs to translate into a project for this workshop.
Students will receive guidance from Maestro Marzi and begin to learn new approaches in mosaic that can strengthen one’s artistic vision and technique. Through lectures, demonstrations and discussions, material experimentation, and presentations, participants will gain skills and confidence in their work. As students explore possibilities of mosaic composition, rhythm, and color, they will also learn about the synergism between the materials, shapes and content of their work.
Hammer and hardie skills are a prerequisite for this course as this cutting technique is used for both stone and smalti; tesserae will be set into mortar using the direct method. All materials are included.
Verdiano Marzi is one of the most highly regarded contemporary mosaic artists. As a permanent resident of Paris and a former instructor at the École du Louvre, Marzi’s own work is abstractly narrative, using his subtle understanding of color and texture to evoke ethereality and expressive movement. His many years of dedicated practice and experience provide valuable insight into mosaics through his use of an expansive range of materials and techniques, from the ancient to the contemporary.
All materials are included. Prerequisite: Hammer & Hardie Workshop, Mosaic I, Mosaic II, and Mosaic III (or by permission of CMS).
