Ravenna Method: Ancient and Modern
The Ravenna Method, also known as the double-reverse technique, offers mosaic artists a versatile third option-- beyond the direct and indirect methods—for making a mosaic. It is an ideal technique for both recreating ancient mosaics and creating modern works.
Students will make two mosaics during this 5-day workshop. The first will be made using specific images from iconic ancient mosaics and include setting smalti and/or marble tesserae into a temporary clay bed before transferring the mosaic to a permanent substrate. The second will be a smaller work in a more contemporary design. This adaptable technique is taught today in several studios in Ravenna. At CMS, students will work on a design based on their skill level and participate in class lectures and exercises.
All materials are included. Prerequisite: intermediate to advanced comfort and skill using the Hammer & Hardie, either with early completion of the Hammer & Hardie Workshop or by instructor permission.
When registering for classes at CMS, please be aware of our refund and cancellation policy.
