Meet CMS Artist in Residence

Chiang Kaichun

CMS is excited to introduce Kaichun Chiang as this year’s second international CMS Artist in Residence. Kaichun is a full-time artist and teacher at the Taipei National University of the Arts, having studied art in France at Le Fresnoy Studio National des Arts Contemporains and the École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Paris, Cergy.
Kaichun’s mosaic practice intersects the material and cultural history of Taiwanese archeology and geology. He will use his residency to expand his practice and research new mosaic works inspired by engaging with the city’s architectural history and mosaic-related practices at CMS. His interest in natural stone will lead him to new, experimental work that coincides with Chicago’s heritage and contemporary scene.

Residency: March - May 2025

Upcoming CMS Artist in Residence

Nanda Yasoda

Residency June - July 2025

She is currently the Artistic Director of Fundación Recrea, an organization that received the 2024 Avonni Innovation Award in recognition of its impact on transforming peripheral spaces and engaging with communities in vulnerable conditions. Her artistic approach is guided, not by rigid planning, but by an intuitive process in which materiality and gesture create a language of recognition and resistance. This methodology has been central to her work with incarcerated women at the Antofagasta Women's Penitentiary, where mosaic has become a tool for symbolic and collective reconstruction.

She has participated in the Biennial of Contemporary Art SACO, where mosaic expands as a language within contemporary art, and in the Contemporary Art Fair CHACO, exploring its relationship with unconventional formats. Her work extends to public space interventions and experimental processes in Spain and Cuba, with pieces installed in Santiago de Cuba and Pinar del Río, where mosaic not only reconfigures surfaces but also reinterprets landscapes and narratives from a collective and humanistic perspective.

The Chicago Mosaic School is excited to announce our upcoming Artist in Residence, Nanda Yasoda from Antofagasta, Chile!

Nanda develops her work at the intersection of art, territory, and community, using mosaic and ceramics as tools for transformation. Her practice is not driven by ornamentation but by the reconstruction of memory and identity through fragmentation. Each assembled piece serves as a material vestige that redefines space and activates collective narratives. During her Residency at CMS, she will explore mosaic as a language of connection and collective construction, examining its potential to redefine memory and shared spaces.
